Q: I upgraded my regular driver’s license from the State of Washington to an Enhanced License, which I believe will work when flying. This license allows me to cross into Canada, for example, using only the Enhanced License. There are two picture IDs on my Enhanced License. Thanks for the article alerting us to a potential problem, recognizing that it is easier to stay out of trouble rather than get out of trouble. – E.B.

A: We’re glad we could help you out and that you had a chance to fix something before it became a problem. Since we first wrote about the REAL ID Act in February, states have started taking action.

Just last month, Maine and Montana both approved bills that mean the states will start issuing IDs that comply with the REAL ID Act.

On Monday, North Carolina began issuing their first REAL ID Act compliant IDs.

If you live in these states, that doesn’t mean your current ID is compliant. You’ll still need to get a new ID if you want to avoid the troubles of having a noncompliant ID.

A: For decades, anyone raising the alarm about a potential health problem with cellphones has been laughed at. Until now…

The recent publication of a government fact sheet – only released after the California Department of Public Health lost a major court case two months ago – changes what the government knows and how serious of an issue this could be.

Q: Doesn’t B6 greatly reduce oxalate levels and thereby reduce kidney stones? I take it in the regular and Pyridoxal-5 phosphate form. – C.R.

A: Your body needs vitamin B6 to change glyoxylate into glycine (two molecules involved in the process for making glucose). If you don’t have enough for the job, you wind up with buildups of oxalate instead. This can build up in the kidneys and lead to stones.

There is some evidence that the vitamin B6 helps lower oxalate levels, meaning you reduce your risk of kidney stones. According to a study from the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the higher the doses of B6 women take, the lower their risk of developing kidney stones.

Similar studies in men haven’t shown as clear of a connection. What’s more, they needed extremely high levels of B6 to lower the oxalate. And the reduction is only in calcium oxalate stones, which is just one type of kidney stone.

That isn’t to say you shouldn’t get plenty of B6. It’s a water-soluble vitamin, so it won’t build up in your tissues. And your body also needs B6 in order to make serotonin, a key neurotransmitter for many parts of your brain.

As always, I still prefer to get my vitamins through whole foods. Seeds, nuts, and fish are all excellent sources of B6… not to mention a good pint of beer.
